Valentine’s Day – Book a romantic day out

Valentine’s Day is a very old tradition; thought to have originated from a Roman Festival called Lupercalia held in the middle of February; the official start of springtime.

According to Noel Lenski; a classics professor at the University of Colorado; young men would sacrifice a dog or goat, strip naked and use whips they made from the skins to spank the backsides of young women in order to improve their fertility. They also drew the names of women from a jar spending the rest of the festival together, sometimes even getting married.

The legend and story of St Valentine are shrouded in mystery. It is thought that Roman Emperor Claudius II executed two Priests; both named Valentine on 14 February in different years in the 3rd century A.D.  This may have been because he had banned marriage in the belief that married men were bad soldiers. A priest named Valentine felt this was unfair and broke the rules by conducting marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, Valentine was jailed and sentenced to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine”.

The two priests became Saints and were honoured by the Catholic Church by the celebration of St Valentine’s Day as a day of romance.
