Welcome to the Ebike Battery Care Guide!
Explore battery care for electric bikes, covering technology basics, charging, storage, and maintenance for longevity and performance.
Whether you’re a seasoned ebike enthusiast or new to the world of electric cycling, taking proper care of your battery is essential for maximising its lifespan and getting the most out of your rides. So let’s dive in and learn how to keep your ebike battery in top condition for many miles of enjoyable riding ahead!
Read the Documentation for Optimal E-Bike Battery Care
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your electric bike’s battery, it is crucial to read any battery booklets specific to your battery that came with the ebike.
This will usually contain vital information pertaining to the care and maintenance of your e-bike’s battery. Specifically, it provides insights into how to best handle and manage the battery to maximize its lifespan.
Store battery at room temperature
It is best to store your ebike battery in a dry environment with a room temperature ranging between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. Extreme temperatures, whether too high (exceeding 25 degrees) or too low (below -10 degrees), can significantly impact the battery’s overall lifespan.
Never store an empty or nearly depleted battery in a cold environment, as this could lead to deep discharge, rendering the battery unusable.
In cold conditions, it’s advised to attach the battery to your e-bike just before setting off and avoid direct sunlight exposure especially during the warmer months. Additionally, always ensure that battery charging occurs at room temperature and refrain from charging when temperatures dip below freezing.
If you are leaving your battery for a long period of time, storing it over winter for example or while away on holiday, try and leave it between 40% and 70% charged. Check the charge status once a month and if it is getting below 30% then top it up
Charging
Always use the correct charger that comes with your battery. Using the wrong charger not only invalidates your warranty but it could damage your battery.
Charge at room temperature in a dry location of an uninhabited room where a smoke detector is installed and the room is not designated for use in an escape.
For winter riding charge and store the battery at room temperature before inserting the battery in the ebike immediately before riding.
Batteries and chargers must not be stored in the vicinity of heat sources or flammable materials. Disconnect the battery from the ebike and store in a room fitted with a smoke detector.
After charging, batteries and chargers should be disconnected from the power supply.
Cleaning
we understand that your e-bike is meant to be enjoyed on the open road, and with adventure comes a bit of dirt. Naturally, your e-bike, including its battery, may get a little messy during your rides. To keep your ride in optimal condition, occasional cleaning is key.
Remove the battery from your e-bike. This ensures safety and prevents any potential damage to the electrical components.
Never clean with direct water contact.
Once the battery is safely removed, use a damp cloth to gently wipe it down. This helps to remove any dirt, dust, or grime that may have accumulated during your rides.
While cleaning, take a moment to inspect the battery for any signs of damage. If you notice any cracks, dents, or other abnormalities, stop using the battery immediately and seek professional advice.
Repair
Direct impact, major impacts, dropping and excessive heat must be avoided. Failure to do so could result in damaged battery cells and cause flammable contents to leak out.
NEVER ever attempt to repair your bicycle battery yourself if it is broken or in need of maintenance.
Stop using the battery immediately and seek professional advice.
